WHY SHOULD TATTOO ARTISTS USE K TAPE ?

Tattooers can benefit from using K tape for added support and relief from repetitive strain injuries caused by tattooing. It can be particularly helpful in reducing pain and preventing wrist, thumb, forearm tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and shoulder pain.

To ensure hygiene and prevent cross-contamination, it is recommended to change the tape between clients if it is exposed outside of gloves or personal protective equipment. The dimensions of the tape are 5 cm width x 5 meters long, and it comes in a blue color.

Here's how to apply the supportive tape: The tape can last between 2-5 days depending on care, use, and skin type (oily vs. dry skin will impact lifespan). It is safe to use with water and soap.

  1. Wash hands with soap and water and let them dry completely.
  2. Apply 71% rubbing alcohol or oil and scent-free hand sterilizer to the area and fingertips and let it dry completely.
  3. Remove the tape from one edge and try to touch as little adhesive as possible using fingertips cleaned with 71% rubbing alcohol.
  4. Place the tape at the base of the joint closest to you (most proximal), pulling the tape with slight tension on the skin for added support.
  5. To make the tape stick better, you can heat the skin with a blow-dryer or heating pad before applying the tape to activate the adhesive.

Here are some tips and maintenance advice for Kinesio tape: Try to complete the application in one smooth motion and avoid folding the tape. The tape will lose adhesive if removed and reapplied. All tape will fray with time, and when the tape starts to peel at the edges, cut off the edges with sharp scissors or a nail clipper and press down on the skin to extend its lifespan. Being proactive with maintenance will increase the life of your Kinesio tape. You can post your experience on social media and tag @TheTattooHandTherapist.
